Position: Director, Energy & Environment Policy

Supervisor: Vice President, Energy & Environment Policy

Status: Full Time

Location: Washington, DC

Reporting to the Vice President, Energy & Environment Policy, the Director, Energy & Environment Policy will be responsible for the development, communication, and advocacy of Auto Innovators’ policy in the chemicals (“substances of concern”) sphere. The Director will also represent Auto Innovators before federal and state legislative and regulatory bodies and coordinate industry responses to federal and state environmental initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Anticipate, monitor, and identify issues related to chemicals legislation and regulation, including Toxic Substances Control Act implementation, state-level per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) activity, safer consumer products programs in California and Washington, and more.
  • Develop and coordinate Auto Innovators positions on regulatory and legislative issues and policies.
  • Prepare and deliver high-quality comments, presentations, testimony, and other advocacy materials on regulatory and policy issues.
  • Develop and maintain strong, positive, and constructive relationships with member companies, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), other state environmental regulatory agencies, trade associations, non-government organizations, and relevant federal and state agencies.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of industry and policy trends.
  • Communicate and collaborate Energy & Environment positions with other Auto Innovators departments including Communications, Federal, and State Affairs.
  • Routinely interact with member companies, other trade associations, and federal and state/local agencies and legislatures.
  • Travel as needed in the United States.
  • All other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience in government advocacy, working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or state-level environmental agencies such as the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC).
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the ability to run meetings and manage workgroups comprised of member companies with possible diverse perspectives.
  • Great interpersonal skills to work effectively with others and achieve consensus among Auto Innovators members.
  • Critical ability to interpret legislative and regulatory initiatives and identify their potential impact on the industry.
  • Strong teamwork skills, and thrives in a high-pace, collaborative, and dynamic work setting.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; good computer skills and ability to learn and incorporate Auto Innovators electronic management systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of energy, environment, and government policy (including potential work in a trade association).
  • Familiarity with state and federal regulatory rulemaking and legislative processes.
  • Knowledge of chemicals policy issues.
  • Passion for Auto Innovators’ mission.

To provide greater transparency to candidates, we share base pay ranges for all US-based job postings regardless of state. We set standard base pay ranges for all roles based on function, level, and country location, benchmarked against similar-stage growth companies. The anticipated salary range for this position is $130,000 to $175,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate location, skills, depth of work experience, and relevant licenses/credentials, and may vary from the range listed. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, medical benefits, 401(k) plan, and other company perk programs.
